Renovation Planned for Midtown's AT&T Plaza
Midtown’s landmark AT&T Tower is gearing up for a renovation project, just months after its major tenant AT&T announced it would vacate the 46-story building.
The project will include an interior lobby renovation, along with a new shade canopy and turf area in the plaza to allow for outdoor events, according to an agenda from the Midtown Alliance. The project is expected to be heard by Midtown’s Development Review Committee on July 17.
Atlanta-based planning and landscape architecture firm HGOR is leading the project.
AT&T announced in January it would leave the tower that sits at the northeast corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and West Peachtree Street. It’s expected to be out by mid-to-late 2019.
The building, owned by an affiliate of billionaire investor Carl Icahn, is the largest of several potential redevelopments emerging south of Tech Square in an area that is a contender for Amazon.com Inc.'s HQ2. In fact, the area around the tower, properties between 4th and West Peachtree streets, the Downtown Connector, and North Avenue, could allow for up to 10 million square feet of new development.
AT&T will make available almost 2 million square feet of office space when it completely exits the tower at 675 West Peachtree, one of the central pieces for the area’s continued development.
Icahn’s team now is moving aggressively to find its next tenant. CBRE Group Inc. has the leasing assignment.
