Nathan Deal Judicial Center

Nathan Deal Judicial Center

Located on the southeast corner of Memorial Drive and Capitol Avenue, the State of Georgia’s Nathan Deal Judicial Center is the first state building in the history of Georgia devoted entirely to the judiciary. The 200,000 SF facility was designed to expand the Capital Hill District across from Capital Avenue and complement the existing campus grounds. In collaboration with Stevens & Wilkinson, HGOR’s work began with building placement on site and has continued through all aspects of the design.

With Liberty Plaza hosting around 100 events and marches a year, pedestrian safety is a critical component for the District. From understanding the topographical challenges of the site in creating parking and accessibility, to preserving the surrounding greenspace, HGOR expertly embraced the fine line between safe and efficient design. Integration of artificial turf in the design provides soft/flexible gathering spaces for outdoor programming, sound attenuation, and visually dynamic pops of green in a space where deep shade from the four-story building defined the plant palette. Design components included a plunge pool, summer kitchen, outdoor dining room, fire pit and soft seating, and covered gaming areas.
