STEVE SANCHEZ

Principal

Steve explores how our landscapes provide critical benefits and essential functions to the built environment.

Having been a part of the HGOR team since its inception, Principal Steve Sanchez utilizes the company's SEE philosophy known as social, economic and environmental consideration when envisioning a project. As HGOR's "environmental specialist," Sanchez is passionate about promoting the increase of natural canopy in our urban areas and considers it an essential part of every project. Sanchez has helped introduce several selections of native species into the industry to ensure our built canopy is also a functioning part of the living ecosystem. His creative designs have emphasized meeting social needs within a framework of environmental responsibility.

As an active member within the industry, Steve is a member of ASLA, the GA Native Plant Society and served on the Board for Trees Atlanta from 2008-2014. Recognized as a true expert in preserving and capitalizing on the natural environment, Steve regularly volunteers to speak about relevant environmental topics to various organizations such as Park Pride, Trees Atlanta and UGA-CED students.

Some of Sanchez's most notable projects include the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Braselton and Gainesville campuses, CHOA's Center for Advanced Pediatrics, The Lovett School, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Duke Integrative Medicine Center. His genuine interest in the environment and how strategically designed landscapes can profoundly impact the future have led him to deliver award-winning projects, including the 2022 Hickory Log Creek Reservoir's Merit Award for Analysis and Planning by the GA Chapter of ASLA. Another current project, the Downtown Atlanta Urban Tree Planting Plan, has allowed Sanchez to partner on a comprehensive city initiative to increase tree canopy from 3% to 20% in 20 years.

"I am enamored with the rich and varied environments of North America," Sanchez shares. "In the Southeast region, there are still so many native species that have not been tapped into for use in our built environments. Their potential for providing real ecosystem value to our cities of the future is unlimited."

Originally from New Orleans, Sanchez attended the Louisiana State University and received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1985. Sanchez currently resides in Atlanta with his wife and two daughters and enjoys exploring wetlands, hiking and canoeing in his free time.
