Berry College Kilpatrick Commons
Berry College Kilpatrick Commons
In conjunction with the expansion of the College’s Krannert Student Center, Kilpatrick Commons was conceived as an outdoor dining experience and campus reception area. Situated at the intersection of major campus circulation routes and a large open space, the design creates a unique destination while resolving significant grade changes and campus circulation.
Drawing from a mountain vernacular appropriate to its location in north Georgia, the design utilizes a cascading stream to link upper and lower levels while pedestrian circulation is routed above, creating an enclosed mountain “grotto” effect. The contrast between the large open commons and the dining grotto is accentuated by a defined bridge underpass at the seating level.
