City of Newnan Parks
The City of Newnan selected the design-build team of New South Construction and HGOR to provide design and implementation services for two park projects, C.J. Smith Park and Lynch Park, as well as for a new pickleball facility. Modifications to Lynch Park, an existing baseball field, aimed to increase versatility so that it could be utilized as both a community baseball and soccer field. In addition, expanding the existing C. J. Smith Park allowed for additional amenities, including a splash pad, multi-use trail, restrooms, pavilion, playgrounds, and the newest and largest skate park and pump track combination in Georgia offering 35,000 SF of rideable terrain. The park features an expansive street plaza section with a competition-level bowl and is one of the nation’s few integrated site-built concrete pump tracks. The terrain is bordered by artistic details and sculptural elements throughout the park.
Early conceptual plans allowed for these park amenities but were also planned in a way that connects visitors through a trail that forces them to cross a busy street - raising safety concerns. HGOR’s planning and landscape architecture efforts provided design options that improved circulation and considered each amenity’s function in relation to the rest of the park. The project was awarded in winter 2019, with a schematic design beginning the same month.
Coinciding with these efforts was the design for a new pickleball facility. The 15-court facility was planned near C.J. Smith Park and centrally located adjacent to the Newnan Public Safety Complex. The project team engaged with the pickleball community in Coweta County to perfect the proposed location, pedestrian flow, and conceptual site plans. Elements include LED lighting, a shade pavilion, restrooms, and a concessions area.
