Turner Field Redevelopment
Turner Field Redevelopment
When the Atlanta Braves announced plans to leave Turner Field for new facilities at the end of the 2017 season, speculation grew as to the future of the sixty-eight acres and stadium sites that had been the Braves’ home for over fifty years.
HGOR was engaged to help understand the context of the land within a vastly different and emerging urban landscape, and to develop a vision for the property that could be responsive to the surrounding neighborhoods, current and future markets, support investment and be transformative to the larger fabric of the city.
In collaboration with Carter & Associates and Georgia State University, HGOR developed a plan that capitalizes on existing public infrastructure and leverages private investment to establish a vision of mixed-market and institutional uses. The master plan establishes a pattern of new streets with a hierarchy of connected campus, and public open spaces compatible with surrounding neighborhoods that provide a variety of development opportunities. HGOR led the discussions in transforming Hank Aaron Drive and Capitol Avenue into a complete street with enhanced pedestrian movements, bicycle lanes and a future transit corridor connecting BeltLine transit to the south with the State Capitol and existing Edgewood Streetcar to the north. Additionally, the institutional needs of GSU are accomplished through the conversion of Turner Field to a football, soccer and track venue and the re-establishment of the footprint of historic Fulton County Stadium.
Since the transformational mixed-use development began in 2016 in blocks surrounding Center Parc Stadium, roughly 1,200 apartments and townhomes have opened or are under construction, with over one billion dollars of completed, under construction or planned investments in and adjacent to the development.
